georgetown university grey bulldog mascot

As the oldest Catholic and Jesuit institute of higher learning in the United States, Georgetown University was almost lost before it had even really begun. In 1789, John Carroll purchased 60 acres of land on a hill overlooking the Georgetown village. Forming the school, classes at Georgetown College commenced in 1792. It would be several years before the first bachelor's degrees were issued, which was in 1817. As a Virginia institution, Georgetown found itself in the midst of The Civil War. Because it only admitted male students, enrollment took an enormous hit. Between 1859 and 1861, it dropped from 313 students to a meager 17. Several of the building on campus were converted to temporary hospitals to aid the war, and higher education was put on hold. After the conclusion of The Civil War, Georgetown celebrated the end by choosing blue (for the Union) and grey (for the Confederacy) as the official school colors in 1876.
